Meet the team

Malcolm Maclean
Director

Malcolm is the founder and director of SRE. He is a Qualified BREEAM Accredited Professional (AP), and is licensed to undertake 10 of the 13 BREEAM commercial and residential methodologies. Malcolm is a licensed Code for Sustainable Homes and SAP Assessor and a qualified Project Manager. He has been involved in schemes ranging from Eco Towns and Millennium Villages to exemplar housing projects delivering low carbon solutions.

Malcolm has been working in the renewable energy sector since 2002. Having studied Architecture at Manchester University, he spent 6 years in the Army Air Corps before completing an MBA at Cranfield University. Malcolm worked with Scottish Power assessing risk for wind farms and headed up a business unit at SolarCentury before setting up SRE – formerly Malcolm Maclean Consultancy – in 2005. 

Malcolm enjoys spending time with his wife and their 3 boys and wearing his tourquoise Hawaiian shirt at parties.

Anna Maclean
Business Manager

Anna is SRE’s Business Manager. She is responsible for personnel, office management and business development.

During her Masters Degree in Geography at Edinburgh University, Anna specialised in environmental issues and ethical trade.  She worked for the environmental consultancy SustainAbility and spent 6 years working in television and radio before training in horticulture and garden design and setting up her own garden design business.

Anna now balances her SRE role with her role of Mummy to her and Malcolm’s 3 boys.

Mark Newbery
Assistant Energy Consultant

Mark is an Assistant Energy Consultant providing input into Energy Statements and Renewable Energy Feasibility Studies. He also supports SRE’s Code work through research and data analysis. 

Mark joined SRE in October 2012 following the completion of his MSc in Environmental Monitoring for Management at Loughborough University. During both his MSc and his BSc in Geography, Mark specialised in renewable energy sources, most notably micro hydro power and biofuels. 

Mark is a graduate member of IEMA and is currently working towards becoming a qualified SAP Assessor.  

When not in the office, Mark can be found chasing shuttlecocks on both the regional and national stage. He is SRE’s badminton champion!

Ian Silk
SBEM/Building Regulations Part L2 Compliance

Ian supports SRE as a Non-Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) and Level 4 SBEM assessor. He provides building regulation compliance checks (Part L2), Energy Performance Certificates and input into Energy Statements on various Commercial Projects.

Ian has been a Commercial DEA for over 4 years and prior to this was working within the oil and construction industries. 

Outside of work Ian can be found sailing the high seas - in all weather.

Adam Harper
Sustainability Consultant

As a qualified Code for Sustainable Homes Assessor, Adam assesses the technical aspects of Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM as well as inputting into Sustainability and Energy Statements.  Adam oversees SRE's on-site monitoring programme which is analysing the performance of different types and standards of residential houses over a 2 year period.
 
Adam joined SRE in June 2012 having completed his BA in Environmental Management at Leeds University.  During his degree Adam specialised in Energy and Transport Policy.  He also investigated the implementation of 2016 Zero Carbon Homes by analysing the challenges and more importantly, suggesting possible solutions.
 
Adam is a key member of Greening Petersfield as well as a local community garden project and a green film club.  Adam is also a Petersfield Mountain Biker.

Iain Turrell
Sustainability Consultant

Iain is a qualified Code for Sustainable Homes Assessor and a trained PassivHaus designer. Since joining SRE in 2008 Iain has been responsible for SRE’s sustainability work, writing Sustainability Statements and undertaking CSH Assessments. Iain also provides technical input into Sustainability Strategies and Route Maps. 

Iain graduated with Distinction from his MSc in Architecture and the Environment at the University of Portsmouth. During his MSc Iain focused on sustainability assessment methods for the built environment. Iain has a BSc (Hons) from the University of Portsmouth in Sustainable Design and Environmental Management where he has also delivered lectures on thermal modelling of buildings. 

Iain worked at The Environment Centre before joining SRE. He is a keen photographer, a car tinkerer and lives by the motto of ‘keep calm and carry on’.

Susanna Groom
Finance

Susanna keeps SRE’s all important books in order.  She supports a number of companies during the week and we benefit from her skills and expertise on a Wednesday.

Sam Paine
Assistant Sustainability Consultant

Sam is SRE's Assistant Sustainability Consultant supporting the technical aspects of Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM as well as inputting into Sustainability and Energy Statements. Sam is also involved with SRE's on-site monitoring programme assessing the environmental performance of different standards of residential homes over 2 years.

Sam has an MSc in Energy and Sustainability from the University of Southampton and a BSc in Environmental Science from the University of Portsmouth. In both courses he focused on energy resources and global climate change.

When Sam isn't working on Sustainability Statements, he's cooking, watching rugby or walking his dogs along the seafront at Southsea.
